Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) and Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) joined U.S. Senators Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and U.S. Representatives Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.-23), Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.-25), and 26 additional congressional members in unveiling a bicameral, bipartisan resolution condemning the Cuban government’s violent response to the thousands of Cuban citizens who have taken to the streets to peacefully call for basic human rights and the end of the dictatorship in Cuba.
Following days of massive protests in cities and towns across Cuba, the Resolutions come as independent Cuban civil society groups report hundreds of peaceful protesters have been arrested, detained, or are missing, while the regime has continued to rely on widespread internet shutdowns and illegal searches of the homes of activists in an effort to quash the burgeoning pro-democracy movement.
“I stand with the Cuban people, who are bravely standing up to a corrupt regime and coming together in the peaceful pursuit of freedom,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “This is an opportunity to create real, lasting change after decades of repression, and the American people must stand in solidarity with those fighting for democracy and our fundamental human rights.”
“The Cuban people’s inspiring and historic stand against decades of oppression and tyranny demands our support,” said Senator Rosen. “I am proud to join my colleagues in this bipartisan reaffirmation that the people of Cuba’s call for freedom will not go unheard or unnoticed, and we will not tolerate violations of their right to pursue freedom and democracy.”
