Charleston, WV – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) was awarded the National George Marshall Award by Hershel “Woody” Williams, World War II Veteran and National Medal of Honor recipient, and the State Funeral for World War II Veterans organization.

“I am truly humbled to receive the George Marshall Award. The real heroes are the men and women like Woody Williams who put their lives on the line in defense of our nation. I know I speak for everyone when I thank Woody. Our nation is better, safer and more inspired because of Woody and the men and women he served with,” said Senator Manchin. “Recently, we have been urging Congress and President Biden to designate a State Funeral for the Final Medal of Honor holder from World War II. Woody’s example of a lifetime of service is something we should all try to emulate. I will continue using my voice in the Senate to fight to honor and serve our Veterans who have sacrificed on behalf of all of us.”

Medal of Honor recipient Hershel “Woody” Williams said the following upon receiving the award in 2020: “Soon the World War II generation will be extinct. A State Funeral for the last of us to go will be part of history that cannot be erased. We can never do enough to thank the World War II Generation who gave us the world we enjoy today.”
