WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) released the following statement applauding the National Science Foundation (NSF) for awarding $828,904 in funding to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. This funding will be used to purchase equipment to further research in the University’s Departments of Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Geoscience.
“As a former computer programmer, I know from my own experience the many opportunities and career paths that are available to Nevadans through computer science and STEM education,” said Senator Rosen. “I am glad that UNLV received grant funding for equipment that will advance research capabilities in our state, strengthen the training of our diverse graduate and undergraduate STEM students, and expand the qualified STEM workforce in Southern Nevada.”
BACKGROUND: This award from the National Science Foundation Major Research Instrumentation Program supports the acquisition of a phase-stabilized optical frequency comb by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The equipment will be a cornerstone toward building a research center for exploring new methods and technologies in quantum sensing and information processing, connecting expertise in AMO physics, condensed matter physics, physical chemistry, electrical engineering, and geoscience. This instrument will enable investigations of fundamental questions in science and engineering. Installation of the requested instrument within a UNLV research core will enhance the capabilities of Southern Nevada economic development in quantum science, novel materials, and astrophysical and geological explorations.
