Senator Joined Bipartisan Congressional Delegation in Mexico City This Week
MEXICO CITY, MEXICO – Senator John Hoeven met with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in Mexico City this week as part of a bipartisan congressional delegation. During the meeting, the senator discussed the importance of the U.S. and Mexico working together to secure the border, not only to stem illegal migration but to prevent drug and human trafficking.
“I appreciated the opportunity to meet with President López Obrador and discuss the importance of securing our shared border,” said Hoeven. “We need to work together to secure the border for the good of both our countries. The U.S. and Mexico need to collaborate, not only to help stop illegal migration, but also to end human trafficking and drug trafficking. The crisis at the border brings real security risks as well as significant harm to the families and children being trafficked and the communities impacted by the illegal drug trade on both sides of the border. As we’re able to get illegal migration under control, we will be able to continue pursuing mutual economic opportunities for our nations.”
Hoeven was in Mexico City as part of a bipartisan congressional delegation led by Senators Tim Kaine and Rob Portman. In addition to President López Obrador, the senators also met with Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico Marcelo Ebrard, as well as Mexican business and civil society leaders.
This week’s meetings build on Hoeven’s trip to the southern border in March, where he assessed the illegal immigration crisis, met with border patrol agents and reviewed Customs and Border Protection (CBP) operations and facilities.
