Washington, DC – U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $502,444 in funding through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for a vision research project at West Virginia University (WVU). This funding was made available through the National Eye Institute and will support a project titled “Photoreceptor neuron specific alternative splicing messenger RNA.”
“West Virginia University continues to excel in groundbreaking research, leading to important contributions in medicine. I am pleased HHS is investing in vision research at WVU,” Senator Manchin said. “As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to advocate for funding to support research done in the Mountain State that benefits our fellow West Virginians.”

I’m pleased to announce this funding that will help increase our understanding of ophthalmology for students and faculty,” Senator Capito said. “HHS’ support of projects like this help create opportunities for our universities, while leading to better health outcomes for people across West Virginia.”
