Manchin Announces $812K to Improve Transportation Infrastructure in Charleston

Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced $812,000 from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for the West Virginia Department of Transportation (DOT). The funding is made possible through the Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) Grant Program, which was established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and will support efforts to monitor and upgrade aging transportation infrastructure in Charleston.

“I am pleased DOT is investing $812K in monitoring and upgrading critical transportation infrastructure in Charleston,” said Senator Manchin. “This investment will promote safety and efficiency for West Virginians and Americans traveling to and within Kanawha County, as well as boost local tourism and spur economic development. My Bipartisan Infrastructure Law continues to deliver historic investments for the Mountain State, and I look forward to seeing the positive impacts of this funding for years to come. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue advocating for resources to strengthen transportation infrastructure across West Virginia.”

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law established the SMART Grant Program with $100 million appropriated annually for fiscal years (FY) 2022-2026. The investments support upgrading city and community technologies to improve transportation efficiency and safety. The West Virginia DOT will partner with Marshall University and the Kyova Interstate Planning Commission in Huntington to deploy the structural health monitoring tool for aging infrastructure.
