[WASHINGTON, DC] – U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today met virtually with Gene Wu, Texas State Representative for the 137th District, Vikki Goodwin, Texas State Representative for the 47th District, Shane Thierry, Texas State Representative for the 146th District and members of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus Delegation about the need to pass federal legislation to protect voting rights. They also discussed the impact of voter suppression bills and efforts from Republicans nationwide to restrict voting rights on marginalized communities, particularly the Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community.
“It was my pleasure to speak with Representatives from Texas and I’m inspired by the bold action they’ve taken on behalf of all Texans and all Americans who deserve equal access to the voting booth. Right now, Republicans across the nation, under the guise of Donald Trump’s Big Lie, are embarking on one of the most aggressive assaults not only on the right to vote—especially for AANHPI, Black and Brown Americans—but also on democracy itself.
“Inaction on voting rights could have a devastating impact on our nation and I believe that those of us in the U.S. Senate have a responsibility to act to protect, strengthen and defend every American’s Constitutional right to vote. We cannot fail to move forward with voting rights legislation—our democracy could very well depend on it.”
