Hoeven: We Need Baseload Power, Not Costly Green New Deal Policies and Energy Taxes

Senator’s Amendment Puts the Senate on the Record in Support of Baseload Power Sources

WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven, a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, today introduced an amendment to the Democrats’ tax-and-spend budget resolution to put Senators on the record regarding the importance of access to affordable and reliable sources of baseload power, including coal-fired and natural gas-fired plants that utilize carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies. The amendment follows a recent report from the North American Reliability Corporation (NERC) warning that areas across much of the U.S. are at an elevated or high risk of blackouts during the summer months. Hoeven’s amendment supports policies that expand the deployment of baseload power resources, which are available 24/7, and opposes efforts to ban traditional fuels, impose costly energy taxes or implement “Green New Deal” style mandates.

“I strongly oppose the Democrats’ tax-and-spend legislation as it takes our nation in the wrong direction. While the Democrats are proposing costly Green New Deal policies and energy taxes, this amendment makes clear that the U.S. should instead be expanding access to baseload power generation using resources like coal and natural gas, while implementing CCUS. The U.S. is the world’s leading economy and has access to vast energy resources. Blackouts and brownouts are simply not acceptable,” said Hoeven.
