WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven today joined Senator Steve Daines (R-Mont.) in urging Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Committee Chairman Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Ranking Member Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) to prohibit funding in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 appropriations bill for the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Disinformation Governance Board.

“It is also known that the board currently lacks any guiding policy, mission statement, or charter. Absent of these necessary guardrails to prevent mission creep, there is substantial risk of government overreach and First Amendment infringements. Although recent reports indicate that the board’s operations have been “paused”, Ms. Jankowicz has resigned, and its dissolution is being considered by DHS, its future remains as unclear as its mission,” the senators wrote.

In addition to Hoeven and Daines, the letter was signed by Senators Roger Marshall (Kan.), Jim Risch (Idaho), Chuck Grassley (Iowa), Todd Young (Ind.), Mike Crapo (Idaho), Mike Lee (Utah), Kevin Cramer (N.D.), John Barrasso (Wyo.), Rick Scott (Fla.), Thom Tillis (N.C.), Cynthia Lummis (Wyo.), James Lankford (Okla.), John Kennedy (La.), Ron Johnson (Wis.), Mitt Romney (Utah) and Rob Portman (Ohio).
