U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, led a delegation to Africa to discuss the importance of the continued economic engagement and military cooperation in the region. The delegation, which included Sens. Rounds (R-S.D.) and Boozman (R-Ark.), visited with leaders and partners in Ethiopia, Kenya and Rwanda. Specific meetings included visits with Prime Minister Abiy of Ethiopia and members of the parliament of Ethiopia, newly elected President Ruto of Kenya and Inhofe’s good friend President Kagame of Rwanda.

“It is bittersweet to visit Africa one last time before my departure from the U.S. Senate,” Inhofe said. “What we have known for quite some time is clear: any reduction in U.S. military presence in East Africa would have real and lasting negative consequences for our African partners. The threat from radical Islamist terrorism is real and growing. For our African partners to win this battle, they need our help. I was proud to lead the effort to establish AFRICOM as a separate combatant command in 2007, and to have seen the benefits across the continent since that time. The presence of U.S. military across Africa, while small, means a great deal to our friends and is a worthwhile investment for the United States. In each country, it was clear that a strong and robust relationship with the United States has helped spur economic growth and regional stability across the continent. I have faith that my colleagues in the House and Senate will continue the U.S.-Africa friendship long after I have retired from the Senate.”
