CENTER, N.D. – U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND), member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, delivered remarks at a celebration to commission a new dragline at BNI’s coal mine in Center, North Dakota.
“Lignite coal has a proud legacy in North Dakota and is a critical component of our nation’s all-the-above energy strategy, providing tangible benefits from its affordability and reliability to its abundance. I’m encouraged to see continued investment in our state’s coal industry and look forward to this dragline helping power our residents and neighbors for years to come,” said Senator Cramer.
Following his remarks, Senator Cramer toured the mining operations and new dragline, which can remove overburden up to 120 feet thick and place it in piles 140 feet tall.
In addition to providing around four million tons of coal for the Milton R. Young Generation Station, which is working to incorporate carbon capture technology, BNI reclaims approximately 200 acres a year at its Center Mine.
