WASHINGTON U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today released the following statement in observance of International Women’s Day:

“This International Women’s Day, the immense strength, resilience, and heroism of women and girls is on full display. Taking up arms to defend their homeland and deliver families to safety in Ukraine, speaking truth to power and championing basic human rights at great personal risk in Afghanistan, and leading their compatriots in exposing government abuses and threats to democracy in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua, women and girls are making our world a stronger, more prosperous, and more just place.

“As we bear witness to shifting global dynamics that increasingly threaten women and girls’ fundamental freedoms – including rising authoritarianism, forced migration crises, and the COVID-19 pandemic – the United States must take definitive action to better support women and girls and to amplify their voices as they courageously fight for liberties and human rights worldwide. Their immeasurable achievements and robust participation in society must be celebrated and encouraged today and every day.”
