U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today released a statement urging his colleagues to vote against discharging the Joint Resolution of Disapproval for arms sales to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee:

“As Iran continues to support terrorist proxies and pursue its goal of regional dominance — and as U.S. credibility and reliability is being questioned following our disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan — our support for partners in the Middle East is as important as ever. Should this arms sale not go through, it would be yet another signal to our partners that they cannot count on the United States.

“Our partners should know that they can count on the United States – that we will provide them what they need to protect our shared interests as well as the many thousands of American citizens who live in Saudi Arabia. If our partners can’t count on us, who will they turn to? China and Russia — two adversaries who are eager to tell our partners that we aren’t reliable, who are working to spread their influence around the world, and who would be more than happy to provide them with military equipment.

“A vote to discharge this resolution is a vote to give Iran and China and Russia more power and influence in the region, and will make our world less safe.”
