CLEVELAND, OH — TODAY, U.S. Senator and Chair of the Banking Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, Sherrod Brown (D-OH), joined Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Marcia Fudge for a ceremonial ribbon cutting for the #WoodhillUpNext Transformation Plan in Cleveland’s Buckeye-Woodhill neighborhood.
Earlier this year, HUD awarded the City of Cleveland and the Cleveland Metropolitan Housing Authority a $35 million Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant. The grant aims to fund a comprehensive change in the Buckeye-Woodhill neighborhood over the next five to seven years, through making improvements in areas including housing and street improvements.
“Housing IS infrastructure. It’s the foundation for opportunity. It’s also the biggest cost most families are facing – and the cost is way too high,” said Brown. “We know the pride Clevelanders take in our city and in their communities. This project will be transformative for this community, and be a model for our city and for Ohio. Build Back Better is going to help more communities come together to do this kind of work, and invest in their neighborhoods.”
Brown has been a strong advocate for federal housing investments, including Choice Neighborhoods grants. Brown is leading Senate Democrats’ efforts to secure housing and community-development investments in the Build Back Better plan. The Build Back Better framework announced October 28 contains significant investments in repairing and preserving public housing; the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative; and expanding the number of Housing Choice Vouchers.
Brown and Fudge were also joined at the event by Northeast Ohio officials including Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority CEO Jeff Patterson, Freddy L. Collier, Jr., Cleveland Director of City Planning and Cleveland City Councilman Blaine Griffin.
