Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Susan Collins, the Ranking Member of the Housing Appropriations Subcommittee, announced that Pine Tree Legal Assistance has received a total of $375,000 to assist individuals who believe that they have been victims of housing discrimination.  This funding was awarded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Fair Housing Initiatives Program.

“Every American deserves a fair and equal opportunity to buy or rent a home,” said Senator Collins.  “This funding will support fair housing initiatives across our state and help ensure that all Mainers have access to safe, affordable housing regardless of their race, gender identity, or sexual orientation.”

Pine Tree Legal Assistance, Maine’s only Qualified Fair Housing Organization, will use this grant to operate the Fair Housing Initiative Enforcement Project of Maine. The project will serve all 16 counties in Maine, including 32 designated Qualified Opportunity Zones.

The Fair Housing Initiatives Program funds fair housing organizations and other nonprofits that assist individuals who believe that they have been victims of housing discrimination.
