WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) – Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs – announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded $5,898,509 in grant funding to National Church Residences in Toledo. This grant was awarded through the Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly program, which provides capital advances to private, nonprofit sponsors to finance the development of housing for low-income elderly residents. This award will support the creation of 30 housing units.
“Our economy and our communities cannot recover until every Ohioan has a place to call home,” said Brown. “This critical investment addresses the urgent need for affordable housing for low-income seniors, while creating construction and development jobs and promoting economic development in Toledo.”
In July 2020, Brown introduced the Emergency Housing Assistance for Older Adults Act that would provide $1.2 billion to ensure that federally-assisted senior housing facilities have the necessary resources to effectively protect residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly program provides Capital Advance funding for the development of supportive rental housing for Very-Low-Income persons aged 62 years or older and project rental subsidies in the form of a Project Rental Assistance Contract (PRAC) to maintain ongoing affordability. This program provides elderly persons with the opportunity to live independently, but with important voluntary support services such as nutritional, transportation, continuing education, and/or health-related services.
