Miami, FL — U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Rick Scott (R-FL) released a joint statement after Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Charles Rettig affirmed that payments given by charitable organizations or directly by members of the public to victims in response to the tragic collapse of Champlain Towers South in Surfside, Florida are tax exempt:
“We appreciate Commissioner Rettig’s confirmation that gifts to survivors of the Surfside tragedy are not taxable. This much-needed clarity means families struggling to rebuild their lives have one less thing to worry about. We will continue to work with federal, state, and local officials to support the families and the surrounding community.”
Earlier this month, Rubio and Scott requested that the IRS provide clear guidance regarding the tax treatment of charitable gifts.
