U.S. Senator Ben Sasse issued the following statement on the 20th anniversary of the September 11th terror attacks.

“Twenty years is a long time, but it feels like yesterday. Images of smoke and audio of goodbyes still cut right to our hearts, even after an entire generation of Americans has grown up in the shadow of 9/11. For 20 years our nation has not suffered an attack of that magnitude. Two decades of security was hard-won.

“The fight against jihad began in the Twin Towers’ winding stairwells, in the Pentagon’s smoke-filled hallways, and in the cockpit of Flight 93. Americans fought back. Through the following years we sent our men and women in uniform into the belly of the beast in faraway places like Mazar-i-Sharif and Kandahar.

“Our troops hunted down and buried the masterminds of 9/11. They decapitated terror networks and killed Bin Laden wannabes who history will never remember. They showed the world that Americans will fight with courage to stop evil. And most importantly, they protected us and they protected our freedoms.

“Time does not heal all wounds. The past few weeks have been difficult for many of our service members and the victims of 9/11. Our hearts break again with them. We mourn with the children who lost moms and dads, spouses who said last goodbyes, and parents who buried their children. We thank them for their sacrifices and now we teach our kids their stories.”
