DETROIT, MI – U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow (MI) and Gary Peters (MI) announced $7,771,550 in federal funding has been awarded to two Genesee and Saginaw County airports. Bishop International Airport in Flint will receive $1,185,989 and MBS International Airport near Saginaw will receive $6,585,561. This funding comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation and is supplemented through the historic American Rescue Plan that Peters and Stabenow helped enact earlier this year. It will allow the airports to upgrade their critical infrastructure. Bishop International Airport will use the grant for reconstructing a taxiway and for the purchase of equipment needed to help a new carrier vehicle keep the airport serviceable when it snows. The grant for MBS International Airport will go toward repairing an existing taxiway and rehabilitating a taxiway lighting system to enhance safety, as well as reconstructing an airport rotating beacon.

“Having reliable and safe air service is crucial for Michigan tourism, commerce, and economic development,” said Senator Stabenow. “This grant is an important investment in the infrastructure of our airports and will help our communities rebound from the pandemic.”

“Michigan airports play a critical role in connecting people and businesses across the state to important markets and destinations,” said Senator Peters. “This funding we secured through the American Rescue Plan will allow Bishop International Airport and MBS International Airport to make necessary upgrades to their essential infrastructure and purchase equipment that will help ensure they can continue providing safe and reliable air travel.”
