JERSEY CITY, N.J. – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), the highest ranking Latino in U.S. Congress, released the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to direct the Biden-Harris administration to reinstate the Trump administration’s “Remain in Mexico” policy:

“The Supreme Court’s decision is a disastrous step that further undermines the United States’ longstanding status as a nation of immigrants and a refuge for those fleeing violence and crisis.
“The Trump administration’s immoral use of the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy is a stain on our standing humanitarian leadership around the world. This xenophobic program forced vulnerable people including pregnant women and victims of violence to wait in squalid tent camps in dangerous Mexican border communities where the Government of Mexico could not guarantee their safety and security.
“At a time when the United States is encouraging countries around the world to open their doors to refugees, including those fleeing Afghanistan, the Supreme Court’s decision will undercut our diplomatic efforts. I urge the Biden-Harris administration to take swift action in using its executive power to curtail and put a lawful end to the implementation of this disgraceful policy.”
