The American Rescue Plan expanded the Child Tax Credit, putting more money in the pockets of Wisconsin families

Viroqua, WI – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin visited the Viroqua Children’s House Montessori Preschool to discuss the expanded Child Tax Credit and making child care more affordable for working families. Baldwin met with preschool staff and Wisconsin parents to talk about much-needed investments in child care and her work to make the expanded Child Tax Credit permanent.

“Last month, families across Wisconsin started receiving the expanded Child Tax Credit and saw firsthand the difference these payments can make,” Senator Baldwin said. “This support has helped families pay for child care and school supplies, support local small businesses, and much more. This historic tax relief is strengthening the economic security of working families and helping lift millions of children out of poverty—and I will continue working in the Senate to make the Child Tax Credit permanent.”

“Early care and education have proven to be vital for children’s development and parents’ ability to work,” said Jessica Anderson, owner of Viroqua Children’s House Montessori Preschool. “Under the current system, some families are priced out of the system. Those who can afford it are often maxed out, sometimes paying 1/3 or 1/2 of their monthly income to secure care for their children. The expanded child tax credit has helped to make childcare a possibility for those who could otherwise not afford to have their children attend. Every child, regardless of family income, deserves a thoughtful and caring environment.”

The Child Tax Credit in the American Rescue Plan provides the largest Child Tax Credit ever and historic relief to the most working families ever—and as of July 15th, most families are automatically receiving monthly payments of $250 or $300 per child without having to take any action.
