FAIRLEA, W.Va. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) today toured the West Virginia State Fair in Greenbrier County.
Senator Capito made stops around the fair with West Virginia Agriculture Commissioner Kent Leonhardt, visited with county commissioners and representatives of the Farm Bureau, toured livestock facilities, spoke with farmers and producers, and met with West Virginians from across the state.
“West Virginia has a proud tradition of agriculture and it’s on full display right here in Greenbrier County at the State Fair,” Senator Capito said. “It was a pleasure to visit with so many farmers, producers, and advocates for growing our rural economy, as well as all the families who made it out today. I sincerely appreciate Commissioner Leonhardt showing me around, and for all the great work being done by folks young and old to promote agribusiness in our state.”
The first local fair was held in Greenbrier County, Virginia in 1854. Over the years as the fair grew and West Virginia became its own state, Wheeling hosted the fair until eventually the longtime Greenbrier County fair was declared the host in 1941.
