RUGBY, N.D. – Senator John Hoeven today met with the board of directors for the Heart of America Medical Center (HAMC) in Rugby, as well as local leaders, to discuss efforts to construct a new hospital. HAMC currently operates a hospital, three clinics and a long-term care facility, with the hospital and original clinic having been built in the 1940s.
Due to the age of the facilities, repairs and updates have become increasingly cost-prohibitive. Accordingly, HAMC is pursuing a plan to construct a new hospital, clinic and long-term care facility at an estimated cost of about $50 million. To help with financing, the medical center is preparing to apply for the Community Facilities Loan and Grant Program under the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development.
As ranking member of the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Committee, Hoeven oversees the funding for USDA and is working to support HAMC as it applies for loan and grant assistance through USDA Rural Development.
“HAMC’s facilities provide essential services to the residents of Rugby, Dunseith, Maddock and the surrounding region,” said Hoeven. “By ensuring strong support for the Community Facilities program and other initiatives at USDA, we’ve worked to advance critical projects, like these new medical facilities, for communities in rural North Dakota. That’s an important part of providing a higher quality of life for our residents, regardless of their zip code, and supporting a stronger economy.”
