Luján Fights to Expand the Affordability Connectivity Benefit in Bipartisan Infrastructure Legislation

Affordable Broadband Provision Will Help More Than 785,000 New Mexicans

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), Chair of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Media, and Broadband, fought to expand the Affordability Connectivity Benefit in the Senate-passed Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. This benefit will help more than 785,000 New Mexicans afford internet access.

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will also help lower prices for internet service by requiring funding recipients to offer a low-cost affordable plan, requiring providers to display a “Broadband Nutrition Label” that will help families comparison shop for a better deal, and by boosting competition in areas where existing providers aren’t providing adequate service. This Affordability Connectivity Benefit will ensure that more New Mexicans have access to high-quality broadband that they can afford.

“For New Mexicans, affordable broadband can make all the difference for students completing their homework, an entrepreneur starting an online business, or even families seeking telehealth services. The bipartisan infrastructure legislation delivers strong investments to increase access to reliable internet, and I was proud to fight to expand the Affordability Connectivity Benefit which will help more than 785,000 New Mexicans afford internet access,” said Luján. “As the Senate works on a budget resolution, I will continue working to deliver investments for New Mexicans.”
