WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on the Legislative Branch which oversees the United States Capitol Police, on Tuesday released the following statement on the announcement that a bipartisan agreement was reached on an emergency security supplemental bill.

“This is good news, but it shouldn’t have been such a herculean lift to reach this agreement. There was a violent attack on the seat of American democracy, and Republicans argued no new security funding was necessary and even blocked the Senate from establishing an independent investigative commission. I’m glad some of my colleagues woke up and realized we need more funding to prevent similar attacks in the future,” said Murphy. “The harrowing testimony we heard from four brave officers today is another reminder of the importance of getting the Capitol Police the resources they need to their job safely.”
