(FRIDAY, July 16, 2021) – This week, thousands of families across Vermont will begin receiving enhanced Child Tax Credit payments with eligible households set to see payments of $250 or $300 per child monthly for the remainder of the year. U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and his colleagues on Capitol Hill passed an historic expansion of the Child Tax Credit as part of the American Rescue Plan Act proposed by President Biden and passed through Congress in March, 2021.

Leahy said:  “Families, in Vermont and across the country, have borne the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic.  We must support children in order to have a successful recovery.  I am proud to support this life-altering expansion of the Child Tax Credit, which estimates say could cut child poverty in half in the United States.”

Families earning up to $150,000 per year are eligible to receive the tax credit, which is predicted to support 123,300 children in Vermont.  Families will receive $3,000 per child between ages six and 17, and $3,600 per child under the age of six.  For most families, payments will be made in automatic monthly installments into the household’s bank account for six months, with the remainder of the credit claimed on their 2021 tax returns.

Income eligible families who did not file a 2020 tax return are still eligible for the tax credit.  Families can register to receive the payment by using the IRS Non-Filer Sign-up tool.
