WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) issued the following statement commemorating Juneteenth:

“156 years ago, Black Americans celebrated Juneteenth as a day that marked freedom and the end of slavery. This year, we finally give this historic day the acknowledgement it deserves by declaring it a national holiday. While I am proud to be a sponsor of the legislation that established Juneteenth as a federal holiday, this measure was long overdue and is simply not enough. For too long, change has come inch by inch when we should be miles ahead – in the footsteps of the leaders who came before us, it is past time to build a more fair and equitable society. We cannot rest until the ideals promised in our Constitution are a reality for all.”
