Cantwell Statement on US-EU Agreement in Boeing-Airbus Dispute

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released a statement following President Biden’s announcement that the US and European Union (EU) have reached an agreement on a Cooperative Framework for Large Civil Aircraft:

Securing a level playing field for aerospace jobs is a big deal in the Pacific Northwest.  Everyone should strive to play by market rules, not distort the market and let the best product win. Aerospace is so important to the State of Washington and the U.S. economy. It supports more than 1.2 million good paying, highly-skilled American jobs across our country and it is vital to our future to have a level playing field.”

The agreement includes:

  • Suspending tariffs related to this dispute for five years, with the flexibility for the US to reinstate them if we are no longer competing on a level playing field.
  • Establishing a Working Group to analyze and overcome any disagreements that will meet on request or at least every six months.
  • Ensuring that our workers and industries can compete on a level playing field through clear agreements on acceptable support for large civil aircraft producers.
  • Working together to confront the threat faced by China’s use of non-market practices to build their aerospace sector such as the appropriation of technology and outward investments in China influenced by non-market forces.
