Today, U.S Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) released the following statement on his vote to avoid a catastrophic default on our nation’s debt:

“No one should have threatened to default on our debts and destroy our economy to impose their agenda on the country. I applaud President Biden and his team for working to avoid such a catastrophe and for ensuring that our core priorities were preserved in this deal. This legislation will protect the American people from the worst of MAGA Republicans’ demands while also preventing a devastating debt default that would cripple our economy and reverse much of the progress we’ve made over the past few years. With this bill, we will avoid jeopardizing the full faith and credit of the United States and enact a budget agreement that should reduce the risk of a shameful government shutdown for the next two years. This agreement will put an end to this manufactured crisis and allow us to better focus on creating prosperity and opportunity for the American people.”
