WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senators and Co-Chairs of the Senate Working Forests Caucus Angus King (I-Maine) and Jim Risch (R-Idaho) celebrated today, April 28, 2023 as the 151st Arbor Day. Earlier in the week, the Senate unanimously passed the King-Risch resolution officially designating the day which recognizes the importance of forests and encourages the planting of trees across the United States.
“Forests are an inspiring part of the Pine Tree State’s history, culture, and identity,” said Senator Angus King. “From paper products and maple syrup to cross-laminated timber and ship masts, trees have powered Maine’s economy for generations. On this Arbor Day, I’m proud to join with Senator Risch in recognizing the importance of trees and encouraging the preservation of our invaluable forests.”
“Idaho is a role model for the nation in showcasing the important partnership between conservation and active forest management. This Arbor Day, I’d like to commend and celebrate those who are doing so much for our state and our nation’s forests,” said Risch, a trained forester. “I am proud to partner with Senator King on introducing a resolution to celebrate our 151st Arbor Day.”
Senator King is a strong supporter of Maine’s forest economy and forest conservation. He was key in establishing the Forest Opportunity Roadmap Maine (FOR/ME) Initiative, an industry-led initiative that is helping to diversify the state’s wood products businesses, attract investments, support research and development, and develop greater economic prosperity for rural communities impacted by mill closures. He also introduced bipartisan legislation to convene a federal advisory panel tasked with making recommendations to secure the health of America’s forests and led the Trillion Trees Initiative to support U.S. leadership in reducing carbon in the atmosphere by restoring and conserving forests.
