WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) joined Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) in introducing the Restore Public Health Institution Trust Act. The legislation would require the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to review the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) decision-making and messaging processes and provide recommendations for improvement.
“Inconsistent messaging and guidance from the CDC during the pandemic shook confidence in government institutions,” said Senator Cramer. “Playing politics with our health is a dangerous public health strategy and cannot be repeated. Our bill will finally shine light onto how COVID-era decisions were made and establish guidelines to ensure a more transparent and consistent approach in the future.”
“During the COVID-19 pandemic, the CDC’s messaging was inconsistent and the data was constantly changing. The mixed messaging undermines the American people’s trust and will have long-term consequences. We need to bring more transparency to the CDC if we are to restore trust in the agency,” said Senator Rubio
Joining Senators Cramer and Rubio are Senators Roger Marshall (R-KS), Steve Daines (R-MT), and Mike Braun (R-IN). Congressman Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) leads the companion bill in the U.S. House of Representatives.
