Rubio, Colleagues Introduce Bipartisan Resolution Marking 1st Anniversary of Vladimir Kara-Murza’s Unjustified Arrest and Detention

Source: United States Senator for Florida Marco Rubio

Russian opposition leader and journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza has suffered two attempted assassinations via poisoning and now faces up to 25 years in prison on bogus charges. Kara-Murza, a staunch pro-democracy and human rights leader, has repeatedly advocated for free speech in his homeland and opposed Vladimir Putin’s unjustified invasion of Ukraine.

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and colleagues introduced a bipartisan resolution in commemoration of the upcoming one-year anniversary of Kara-Murza’s arrest. The resolution condemns the inhumane treatment of Kara-Murza at the hands of Russian authorities and urges for increased U.S. government support to the Russian opposition.

Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL), Roger Wicker (R-MS), Chris Coons (D-DE), Pete Ricketts (R-NE), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), and Jim Risch (R-ID) are original cosponsors.

  • “The Senate condemns the unjust detention and indicting of Russian opposition leader Vladimir Vladimirovich Kara-Murza, who has courageously stood up to oppression in the Russian Federation….”

  • “Calls on the President to increase support provided by the United States Government for those advocating for democracy and independent media in the Russian Federation, which Vladimir Vladimirovich Kara-Murza has worked to advance.”
