The U.S. Senate rejected an amendment offered by U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) that would have halted the repeal of the 2002 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) until the President certifies that Iran has stopped providing financial, technical, and material support to terrorist organizations and violent groups in Iraq and Syria.
“The main threat to U.S. service members in Iraq and Syria comes from Iranian-backed terrorists and militias. Deterring these attacks requires clarity and resolve, which the current AUMF provides. It is a mistake to limit the President’s ability to protect Americans and our interests.” – Senator Rubio
