WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) released the following statement after voting to strike down a dangerous Washington, D.C., city council bill that would lower sentences for violent crimes:
“Reducing penalties for violent crimes like carjacking and robbery is an outrageous response to rising crime rates in our nation’s capital. Today, we took action to push back and protect public safety.
“But it’s not enough to be against these soft-on-crime policies. We also need to be doing more to support our men and women in law enforcement. For example, police departments across Nebraska are understaffed and overworked.
“I have a bipartisan bill that would reduce the financial strain of recruitment expenses and open up stronger hiring pipelines for law enforcement. If we really want to tackle crime head-on, we need to be passing these kinds of bills as well.”
