Officer Villicana Created The Northeast Area Command’s Hispanic Coalition and Is Leading The Way In Culturally-Specific Outreach In East Las Vegas

WASHINGTON, DC —  Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) announced that Las Vegas Metro Police Department (LVMPD) Officer Laura Villicana, a native of East Las Vegas, will be her guest at this year’s State of the Union Address. Officer Villicana has been leading the way in strengthening the relationship between the East Las Vegas community and LVMPD by creating the Northeast Area Command’s Hispanic Coalition, which brings stakeholders together to share resources, learn more about the command’s work, and create trust and communication in the community. Her innovative outreach efforts towards Las Vegas’ Latino community through culturally-specific events, such as “Agua Fresca With A Cop,” a fresh take on the classic “coffee with a cop,” have earned Officer Villicana recognition in the community.

“As an East Las Vegas native, Officer Laura Villicana has been doing exemplary work to bring her community and LVMPD closer and increase trust. Her innovative approach to reaching out to the Latino community through ‘Agua Fresca With A Cop’ is critical in strengthening community policing efforts in Las Vegas,” said Senator Rosen. “It is my honor to have Officer Villicana as my guest at this year’s State of the Union Address and highlight her work to ensure public safety, strengthen local relationships, and improve community outreach efforts.”

“I love what I do, I am passionate about my community,” said Las Vegas Metropolitan Officer Laura Villicana. “It is an amazing feeling to have all my passion for the Hispanic community be recognized by Senator Rosen.  I am honored to be invited to be her guest during the State of the Union.”

Senator Rosen has been a strong proponent of inclusive community policing and public safety. As part of the government funding legislation she helped pass last year, Senator Rosen secured millions in funding for police departments in Las Vegas, Sparks, and West Wendover. These funds helped to finance a new reality-based training center for the LVMPD, as well as improved communication tools and equipment to assist first responders.
