WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer, member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, cosponsored the Strategic Production Response (SPR) Act, legislation led by Senator John Barrasso (R-WY). The bill would prohibit the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) from tapping the SPR for reasons other than a severe energy supply interruption until the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) issues a plan to increase oil and gas production on federal lands and waters.

“It’s unthinkable the Administration would use an emergency reserve like the Strategic Petroleum Reserve – which was created during a time of scarcity – in a time of abundance,” said Senator Cramer. “We need to untap American innovators, like those in the Bakken, who produce oil cleaner and at lower cost than anywhere else in the world, and create domestic distribution and global export opportunities. This Administration is derelict in its approach to energy, as well as its approach to environmental stewardship.”

Senators Cramer and Barrasso are joined by Senators Jim Risch (R-ID), Mike Lee (R-UT), Steve Daines (R-MT), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), John Hoeven (R-ND), James Lankford (R-OK), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), and Roger Marshall (R-KS).
