Klobuchar has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine, traveling to the country twice this year, meeting with Zelenskyy both times
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) released the statement below on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s address to Congress. As a staunch supporter of Ukraine and a member of the congressional escort committee for Zelenskyy’s visit, Klobuchar met briefly with Zelenskyy prior to his remarks.
“Tonight, I welcomed President Zelenskyy to Washington and reiterated our country’s strong bipartisan support for Ukraine. The brave Ukrainian people have defended their homeland in a way that few expected would be possible when Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked invasion began almost ten months ago. That’s why Congress is coming together before the end of the year to provide additional security and humanitarian assistance to help the Ukrainians who are fighting tirelessly for their freedom even as they face a harsh winter with unreliable access to heat and power. We must continue to stand with Ukraine.”
Klobuchar went to Ukraine twice this past year and received the Ukrainian Order of Merit, First Class from President Zelenskyy. In August, Klobuchar and Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) went to Ukraine, where they met with senior Ukrainian leaders, including Zelenskyy and Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov, to receive a firsthand account of Russia’s illegal, unprovoked and brutal war on Ukraine. The senators also went to Bucha and Irpin, the sites of horrific Russian atrocities earlier this spring, as well as Hostomel Airport, where the Ukrainian people claimed an early and key victory against the Russian army.
In January, Klobuchar went to Ukraine with a bipartisan group of Senate colleagues to meet with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy and reaffirm the U.S.’ strong bipartisan commitment to a sovereign Ukraine.
Additionally, in March, Klobuchar went to Poland with a bipartisan group of colleagues where they met with Ukrainian refugees, military leaders, American soldiers, and aid workers.
