Representative Michelle Fischbach led the passage of companion legislation in the House. Bill now goes to the President’s desk to be signed into law
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Tina Smith (D-MN) announced that their bicameral legislation to rename the Vergas Post Office in honor of veteran and longtime mail carrier Jon Glawe has passed the Senate. Glawe, who passed away in 2016, spent 36 years working as a mail carrier in the Vergas community. The legislation was first introduced by Representative Michelle Fischbach (R-MN), who led its passage through the House in September. The bill now goes to the President’s desk to be signed into law.
“From his time as a member of the U.S. Army’s Third Armored Division stationed in Germany to the 36 years he spent delivering mail to his neighbors in Vergas, Jon Glawe’s life was marked by his tireless commitment to serving his community and country,” said Klobuchar. “By renaming the Vergas Post Office in his honor, we are paying tribute to Jon Glawe’s legacy of service and helping the Vergas community keep his memory alive for generations to come. Thank you to Representative Fischbach for leading this effort in the House.”
“Jon Glawe embodied the life of a public servant, having served in the U.S. Army and dedicating 36 years of his life to being a mail carrier in service of his neighbors,” said Smith. “He had an extraordinary impact on the Vergas community and renaming this Post Office in his honor will allow the memory of his life and service to live on.”
“Jon Glawe had the chance to travel the world in the U.S. Army, but ultimately, his heart was in Vergas, MN where he returned to marry his high school sweetheart and become a staple in his community,” said Fischbach. “He ran a dairy farm, raised three children, and for 36 years he ran the postal route as his father had, often going above and beyond his duties, such as delivering necessities like medicine and food during snow storms. He loved his rural roots and his community loved him back. It was an honor to author this legislation and I am overjoyed to memorialize Jon in this way.”
