WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Cory Booker, Bob Menendez (both D-N.J) and U.S. Representative Mikie Sherrill (D-N.J.-11) today released the following joint statement after the Senate passed the Daniel Anderl Judicial Security and Privacy Act. The bill is now headed to the President’s desk for its signature into law:

“On July 19, 2020, an aggrieved former litigant targeted New Jersey’s U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas after finding her home address online — injuring her husband Mark Anderl and killing their beloved son Daniel. In the days that followed, we made a personal vow to Judge Salas. We swore to act swiftly, and to never stop fighting until we passed legislation that paid tribute to Daniel’s legacy by protecting judges and their families from future threats. With today’s Senate passage of the Daniel Anderl Judicial Security and Privacy Act, we kept our promise — taking a decisive step towards protecting the judges who serve on the federal bench.

“This bill strengthens our democracy and ensures that federal judges can perform their solemn duty of administering equal justice under the law without fear of retaliation. We accomplish this goal by striking the balance between safeguarding the personal safety of judges and preserving transparency and accountability in the judiciary. We thank our bipartisan group of colleagues who joined us in honoring Daniel Anderl’s life, and we remain forever indebted to Judge Salas and her husband who turned their grief into purpose. Their strength and commitment to this bill were pivotal in protecting federal judges and their families from harm.”
