Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin, member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, announced $673,865 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for two research projects at West Virginia University (WVU). The funding will support critical research into transportation infrastructure resilience against natural disasters and the role of waste treatment systems in global sanitation initiatives.
“West Virginia University continues to make our state proud with vital research projects that will improve the lives of people across the world,” said Senator Manchin. “I’m pleased the National Science Foundation is supporting our hardworking students, faculty and staff involved with these two critical initiatives, which will advance our understanding of transportation infrastructure resilience against natural disasters and global sanitation initiatives. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue advocating for resources to support research projects across the Mountain State.”

- $540,000 – West Virginia University
- This funding will support critical research into transportation infrastructure maintenance with a focus on natural disaster resilience.
- $133,865 – West Virginia University
- This funding will support critical research into waste treatment systems and their role in global sanitation initiatives. WVU will collaborate with the University of South Florida and California State University, Chico to complete the project.
