Senator Worked to Secure $6.3 Million in Federal Funds to Support Interactive Educational Center
MINOT, N.D. – Senator John Hoeven today marked the grand opening of the Magic City Discovery Center, an interactive children’s museum that provides science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) educational opportunities for Minot families, including those stationed at Minot Air Force Base. The center first opened in 2014 in a temporary location with the goal of providing an entertaining environment that helps educate children while developing their critical-thinking skills. Hoeven then worked through his role on the Senate Defense Appropriations Committee to support the center in securing a permanent location to grow its operations and expand its ability to serve families in the area. The senator:
- Worked to fund the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Defense Community Infrastructure Pilot (DCIP) Program.
- Worked with DoD on behalf of the project sponsors to get the department to approve Minot’s application and award the funds in a timely fashion to ensure the project could move forward without delay.
- Ultimately secured $6.3 million for the construction of the new 22,000 sq. ft. facility. Combined with local funding, the total project cost came to $14 million.
“The Magic City Discovery Center stands as an investment in the future of the Minot region, helping to enrich the lives of families and supporting the development and success of their children,” said Hoeven. “When the project first started in 2014, we quickly recognized the positive impact it would have. That’s why we worked to secure $6.3 million in DoD funding to enable the construction of this impressive new facility. We appreciate the hard work of everyone involved in making the Magic City Discovery Center a reality, ensuring this important resource is available to Minot and the surrounding area for years to come.”
