Legislation Reauthorizes Firefighter Grant Programs, Supports Local Fire Stations
WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven today released the following statement after the Senate approved the Fire Grants and Safety Act, legislation to reauthorize the U.S. Fire Administration and federal grant programs that support local fire departments.
“North Dakota’s firefighters and first responders do a great job saving lives and property in emergency situations. Their services are vital to the well-being of our communities and providing a high quality of life for our citizens,” Hoeven said. “This legislation renews and updates important programs for our firefighters to ensure that they have the resources and support necessary to safeguard our communities.”
Specifically, the Fire Grants and Safety Act reauthorizes the:
- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program.
- SAFER helps state, local, and tribal fire departments address staffing needs by assisting with the hiring and retention of firefighters and first responders.
- Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program.
- AFG is utilized by local fire departments to purchase equipment and vehicles, develop fire training and education programs, and improve emergency medical services and health screenings for firefighters.
