WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven recently joined Senator Steve Daines (R-Mont.) in introducing legislation to prohibit the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) from banning the use of traditional lead ammunition or tackle on public lands.

“Our legislation will protect sportsmen and their access to hunt and fish on public lands. These activities are a treasured past time in North Dakota, and federal overreach should not hinder someone from hunting and fishing,” said Hoeven.

This bill comes as FWS entered into settlement negotiations last year with activist organizations over a lawsuit regarding the use of traditional ammunition and tackle on over three million acres of federal land. Hoeven previously joined his colleagues in urging FWS Director Martha Williams to resist pressure from activists and not restrict the use of lead ammo and tackle on public lands.

n addition to Hoeven and Daines, the bill is sponsored by Senators John Boozman (Ark.), Mike Braun (Ind.), Roger Wicker (Miss.), James Risch (Idaho), Mike Crapo (Idaho), Cindy Hyde-Smith (Miss.), Thom Tillis (N.C.), Roger Marshall (Kan.), Cynthia Lummis (Wyo.), Rick Scott (Fla.), John Barrasso (Wyo.), Pete Ricketts (Neb.), Kevin Cramer (N.D.), Markwayne Mullin (Okla.), Dan Sullivan (Alaska), Deb Fischer (Neb.), Tom Cotton (Ark.), John Thune (S.D.), Ted Budd (N.C.), Shelley Moore Capito (W.Va.), Mike Rounds (S.D.), Josh Hawley (Mo.) and Tommy Tuberville (Ala.).
