WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) made this statement after voting in favor of Senator Rand Paul’s (R-Kentucky) amendment to the Fire Grants and Safety Act (S. 870).
Fire departments across the country dismissed employees based solely on their decision not to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, or if they spoke against the vaccine mandate. The Paul amendment would only provide funding to fire departments that reinstate and provide backpay to firefighters that were terminated on these grounds. The Paul amendment failed by a vote of 45-54.
“I’m very supportive of Senator Rand Paul’s amendment that would only provide funding to fire departments that offer full reinstatement and backpay to firefighters who were terminated because they did not follow the COVID-19 vaccine mandate.
“Opposing Senator Paul’s amendment would be a blow for individual freedom. We are not going to make public health better by punishing people who exercise their rights as individuals.”
