Sen. Cramer: North Dakota Receives Over $80 Million to Strengthen Water Infrastructure on Tribal Lands

BISMARCK – U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND), member of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Subcommittee on Transportation and Infrastructure, announced the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) awarded North Dakota $80,235,800 for Fiscal Year 2023 to upgrade water systems on tribal lands. These resources were allocated in the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).

“From improving pipelines to installing generators and repairing roads, updating and replacing rural and tribal water infrastructure across North Dakota is essential,” said Senator Cramer. “Communities in every corner of the state are benefitting from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.”

BOR will disburse the funding as outlined below.  

$54,380,000 for Three Affiliated Tribes:

  • $20,100,000 to construct a new Mandaree Water Treatment Plant (WTP)
  • $8,630,000 to construct a new Fort Berthold Rural Water System Administration and Maintenance Shop Building
  • $7,080,000 to construct storage buildings at Mandaree, Parshall-Lucky Mound, Twin Butte, and White Shield service areas
  • $4,590,000 to permanently repair the Mandaree WTP intake slope tube cover
  • $3,500,000 to replace the Four Bears ground storage tank
  • $2,480,000 to install 24 backup power generators at Fort Berthold Rural Water Systems facilities
  • $1,770,000 to build a maintenance storage building for the Four Bears service area
  • $1,750,000 to construct a booster station and pipeline serving Little Shell Water System
  • $1,500,000 to replace the Four Bears WTP, intake equipment, and pumps
  • $1,130,000 to improve the Mandaree intake access road
  • $1,000,000 to install slope protection measures
  • $850,000 to construct a booster station and pipeline serving the White Shield Water System

$13,023,707 for Turtle Mountain:

  • $6,000,000 to replace the glued PVC with new pipe and extend the watermain along Highway 3 and BIA 8
  • $4,000,000 to replace the watermain and curb stops within the Belcourt Housing area
  • $1,850,000 to replace a three-mile road, including service lines and connections to the watermains
  • $773,708 to improve the Turtle Mountain Rural Water System treatment plant
  • $400,000 to replace infrastructure throughout the rural water system, including hydrants, valves, and leaking lines

$10,639,723 for Standing Rock:

  • $5,335,000 to replace approximately 6,265 feet of asbestos cement pipe with HDPE pipe in Cannonball, North Dakota
  • $2,160,000 to replace 3,200 feet of asbestos cement pipe with HDPE pipe in Kenel, South Dakota
  • $1,902,000 to upgrade several master meters
  • $1,026,561 to support office upgrades, including to the windows, roof, and siding
  • $125,000 to relocate 690 feet of pipe in a slide area along Highway 1806
  • $91,162 to repair a stabilizing embankment

$2,192,370 for Spirit Lake:

  • $1,000,000 to support office upgrades, including to the windows, roof, and siding
  • $536,560 to repair 8,550 feet of the access road to the Spirit Lake Water Treatment Plant
  • $400,810 to repair the coating system on the St. Michael pedestal spheroid water tank
  • $255,000 to repair the access road to the RS Tank on the Spirit Lake Rural Water System
