Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) is continuing her fight to fix our broken immigration system by reintroducing the Fairness for Immigrant Families Act. This commonsense legislation addresses the outdated laws complicating our immigration system and cracks down on notario fraud, which takes advantage of immigrant families.
“I’m fighting to ensure we have an immigration system that treats everyone with dignity while strengthening our border security,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “My legislation makes commonsense fixes to bring immigrant families out of the shadows and crack down on fraudsters taking advantage of hard-working immigrants.”
One in five Nevadans is an immigrant, and Nevada has the highest proportion of undocumented residents of any state at seven percent. More than a quarter of a million Nevadans live with at least one undocumented family member, including one in seven U.S. citizen children. Cortez Masto’s legislation would remove arbitrary barriers that make it impossible for undocumented people to adjust their status while combating notario fraud and helping protect victims of corrupt immigration practices.
The Fairness for Immigrant Families Act is endorsed by UnidosUS, American Immigration Lawyers Association, SEIU, FWD.us, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, Third Way, Immigration Hub, Immigrants’ List Civic Action, Nevada Immigrant Coalition, UNITE HERE Culinary Workers Union Local 226, Latin Chamber of Commerce of Las Vegas, Immigrant Home Foundation, Make the Road Nevada, Dream Big Nevada, Arriba Las Vegas Worker Center, and AILA Nevada.

The first and only Latina Senator, Senator Cortez Masto has consistently worked to pass meaningful immigration reform that balances critical border security measures with a path to citizenship for Dreamers, TPS holders, and essential workers. She pushed back strongly against Trump administration efforts to terminate the DACA program and calling on her Senate colleagues to take action in response to ongoing litigation that could threaten its future.
