WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement regarding the downing of a Chinese spy balloon:

“Why wasn’t this Chinese spy balloon shot down earlier over the Pacific?

We have 70 years of established procedures when it comes to defending U.S. airspace.

There needs to be a full, transparent accounting of what happened and why this spy balloon was allowed to violate U.S. territorial sovereignty for so long in the first place.

Congress deserves to know if there was a breakdown in protocols by NORTHCOM and NORAD.

We can’t continue to project weakness during a time of significant global instability.”
