WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) joined Senators John Hoeven (R-ND) and Jon Tester (D-MT) in sending a letter to U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Shalanda Young, urging her to include resources for properly staffing and securing the northern border with the Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 President’s Budget Request for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The senators, who represent states along the U.S.-Canada border, highlighted priorities like resuming normal operating hours at the northern ports of entry, investing in technology deployment, and recruiting and retaining additional U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers and U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) personnel.

“We support ensuring that our border professionals have the personnel, technology, and tools necessary to secure our nation’s borders. In doing so, it is important that the Federal government effectively carry out its responsibility to safely and effectively secure both our northern and southern land borders. This is particularly important given the increased levels of activity at the southern border over the past several years which has necessitated the reallocation of personnel and resources, including technology, from our border with Canada,” wrote the senators.

Joining Senators Cramer, Hoeven, and Tester are Senators Angus King (I-ME), James Risch (R-ID), Tina Smith (D-MN), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Steve Daines (R-MT).
