THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS — U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Chris Coons (D-DE) issued the following statement today after participating in a congressional delegation to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, following their meetings in Kyiv, Ukraine.
“During our visit to Kyiv, we saw compelling evidence that Vladimir Putin and other Russian leaders are committing atrocities and war crimes in Ukraine. President Putin must be held accountable for these crimes. This is why we went to The Hague to meet with officials from the International Criminal Court and Prosecutor Khan to discuss how the United States can better support their efforts to deliver justice to the people of Ukraine.
“We also met with Prime Minister Rutte and commended his government for its leadership role in the fight for justice. It is critical that we come together as a global community to hold Vladimir Putin and his regime accountable, just as we have come together to support Ukraine’s fight to defend itself.”
Senator Portman is co-chair and co-founder of the Senate Ukraine Caucus and a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Senator Coons is Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations and a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
