CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Today, U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), both members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced the City of Wheeling will receive $500,000 to support its efforts to reopen the Ohio Valley Medical Center (OVMC) hospital and health complex. The funding is made possible by a Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) request secured by Senators Manchin and Capito and is funded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

“For generations, the Ohio Valley Medical Center (OVMC) hospital and health complex provided critical services for many West Virginians in the Northern Panhandle, and its closure in 2019 created a hole in the community. Local leaders in Wheeling stressed the importance of revitalizing the hospital to me, and I’m proud to deliver needed resources to support their efforts. Access to life-saving care is important to the health and safety of our residents, and I will always work to help maintain that access through my role in the U.S. Senate,” Senator Capito said.

“The Ohio Valley Medical Center provided accessible, essential care for its community until its closure in 2019, and I was proud to secure this funding to support the City of Wheeling’s efforts to reopen the facility,” Senator Manchin said. “The funding announced today will support facility updates, the installation of energy efficiency systems and more. The hospital revitalization project is also expected to create around 500 jobs, including more than 400 in the health sector. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue advocating for resources, including earmarks, to support our healthcare organizations as they care for West Virginians across the Mountain State.”

In total, Senator Capito secured $241,135,000 and Senator Manchin secured more than $166 million in direct spending measures for initiatives and projects across West Virginia through the Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 appropriations omnibus package.
